What is the county or state department that keeps house sales records?

I am looking to find information on recent home sales and prices in my area. I know they are available online through the county, but I can’t figure out what department to search for.

Try the tax assessor’s office or county clerk’s office.

Your best bet would be to check the MLS. This is the service that realators use to list properties. I would go online and look up a local real estate agency, or you can always use Zillow.com. They will list comprable sales in the area, as well as telling you the details of the homes, and other homes for sale in your area.
